The Dell PowerVault NX1950 is a networked storage system that merges NAS and SAN, Fibre Channel and iSCSI, and systems from Dell and EMC. Optimized for performance and interoperability, the system simultaneously stores both file data and blocks of application data in virtually any operating environment. Its modular design and unified management delivers simplicity across-the-board, which streamlines system set up and ongoing management. A comprehensive suite of advanced software capabilities comes bundled with the system, including point-in-time snapshots, remote replication, storage resource-management, and multi-node clustering.

Unified Networked Storage

Through the convergence of two network storage architectures, the versatile PowerVault NX1950 combines the simplicity of NAS and the scalability of SAN. Available in two versions, the system can be deployed as an integrated solution that comes packaged with Dell PowerVault modular disk subsystems or as a gateway that connects to disk arrays in a Dell/EMC Storage Area Network (SAN). The PowerVault NX1950 can be configured individually or in a multi-node cluster for environments that require high availability.

Optimal Performance and Interoperability

As a midrange NAS solution, the PowerVault NX1950 has been optimized to deliver outstanding performance. In Linux®, UNIXT, and MacT environments, the PowerVault NX1950 integrates seamlessly with key NFS capabilities, including identity management, file permission mapping and symbolic links. In Windows environments, Dell's PowerVault NAS solution offers superior integration with Active Directory, NTFS permissions, and other core functions familiar to administrators. The PowerVault NX1950 is fully compatible with a third-party Windows-based anti-virus and backup applications that can be installed directly on the system.

iSCSI Technology

With the inclusion of iSCSI and standard NFS and CIFS protocols, the PowerVault NX1950 is capable of storing blocks of application data in addition to file data. The iSCSI storage protocol allows servers running applications such as Microsoft Exchange Server or SQL Server to access a remote storage array as if it was locally-attached. As a result, information processing is optimized overall, because application workloads are managed by host servers and storage workloads are handled by the PowerVault NX1950.

Advanced Management

Many advanced software capabilities come bundled with the system, including point-in-time snapshots for enhanced data availability and remote replication for load balancing and data protection, as well as storage resource-management features that help optimize storage capacity, screen out files that are inappropriate, and set quotas that restrict users from consuming too much space. In addition, multi-node clustering is supported for environments that require a high degree of data availability.
